"I got the DonJoy knee brace about a month ago and the difference is night and day. I’m able to walk and bike once again. I saw an immediate change to the stability of my knee, even stairs are not so daunting to face anymore. I’m very happy to be mobile once more. Even dancing all night no longer proves to be a problem. Most difficult part of getting my brace was the colour / pattern choice. I’d highly recommend this type of brace. By the way my knee injury consists of a blown ACL and severely damaged meniscus!"

Chiropractic History In Canada

Daniel David Palmer in Davenport, Iowa, founded chiropractic in 1895; in fact, the “Memorial” in the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) was done so in his honour. Since Palmer’s first chiropractic adjustment, this profession has developed and grown to become one of the largest primary contact health care professions in North America.

CMCC welcomed many veterans returning from WWII when it officially opened on September 18, 1945. The founders of the CMCC envisioned their institution establishing a high standard of chiropractic education and they wanted to become a catalyst for the development of chiropractic in Canada. For 50 years the CMCC served all of Canada as the sole provider of chiropractic education. As a result, the majority of today’s practicing chiropractors in Canada are graduates are CMCC graduates. This chiropractic college is evidence-based and they have a patient-centred approach which attracts students from all around the world.

Daniel Palmer

Daniel Palmer educated himself in all the current science of that day, pseudo-science, as well as fads and built up a very successful practice.

In 1895 the janitor in Palmer`s building told Palmer how he had been deaf in one ear for 17 years after he had felt something “let go” at the top of his back. Palmer took that opportunity and examined him only to discover a bone out of place at that spot. After some convincing, the janitor allowed Palmer to “put the bone back in place” through a carefully analyzed manipulation. After two such manipulations the janitor could hear again and his hearing was normal for the remainder of his life.

After this success, Palmer went into seclusion for six months to carefully study the effects of manipulations on a wide variety of his patients. He truly felt he was on the edge of an amazing discovery so he was very secretive about what he was up to.

By 1900 Palmer proclaimed chiropractic as a profession and began to teach others his system of adjustments. Soon new chiropractors were spreading and before long they were in Canada.

While all this was going on, the field of health care was rapidly evolving. In the late 1800’s there were three main schools of health care; the physicians who worked with medicines and surgery, eclectics who worked with natural botanicals, and the manipulators, (mainly in the form of osteopaths but soon joined by the chiropractors).

Opposition Began

By 1912 physicians were the predominant field in health care that was supported by the US government. In fact, there was a rapid movement away from natural health care. Osteopathic health care was assimilated into mainstream medicine and to practice this field, one had to become an MD first then do further study to become an osteopath. This type of health care was not favoured therefore osteopathy became a dying profession in the US, though they are still present in Canada today. Only the persevering chiropractors remained, led by its discoverer and his entrepreneurial son, BJ Palmer.

The US government, in an effort to eliminate the weaker, profit-based medical schools, commissioned the Flexner Report (1912), describing the state of the schools in the US and making sweeping recommendations for reform. Meanwhile in 1915, the Ontario government issued a similar report, the Hodgins Commission, an investigation into the state of medical education in Ontario. This report noted “new avenues of healing which had not previously been dreamed of,” including “bone setting”, “manipulation” and “mechanotherapy”. Three chiropractors gave deputations to the commission, including BJ Palmer. Palmer was rather flamboyant and he, with the other two, espoused the fundamentalist philosophy that chiropractors “have no use for diagnosis”, “do not believe in bacteria” and believe “the analysis of blood and urine … has no value”. Naturally this commission reacted as expected and recommended that Ontario’s three chiropractic colleges be shut down.

Fortunately the commission did recognize the value in these methods and recommended they be added to the medical curriculum. It wasn't until 55 years later (1970) that the Ontario government saw that no action was taken by the medical schools and they chastised the medical profession for failing to incorporate manipulation into its curriculum. As further evidence of the mainstream medical opposition for any form of physical therapy, physiotherapists were not registered to practice in Ontario until 1933, (18 years after Hodgin’s recommendations).

Public support for chiropractic remained strong in Ontario (and in Canada) because it provided the most effective treatment for back pain. In 1925 the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons in an effort to limit the chiropractors’ role in health care, requested the government enact legislation to regulate the health practitioners out of their jurisdiction. As a result the “Drugless Practitioners Act” of 1925 was enacted to regulate chiropractors, optometrists and other new professions. Chiropractic was now legal but strictly limited.

During the next 30 years many chiropractic techniques were developed that are still used today. The success they had with their approach created countless loyal patients all across Canada and the US, in spite of medicine’s animosity.

Battle Heats Up In The Us

Unfortunately, over these 30 years the medical associations across the US started a program of having chiropractic practitioners arrested for “practicing medicine” without a license. For those in the field, it became an honour for a chiropractor to get arrested at least once in his career. The legal argument that no practice of medicine was going on, only the practice of chiropractic, stood up quite well in the courts but for 30 years there were countless chiropractors arrested and charged.

Advances In Ontario

It was during this era that a new chiropractic college, the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in Toronto, was founded in 1945, catering to men returning from the war with government subsidies for education in their pockets. It was instantly successful and has over its first 60 years out-grown two new campuses.

In 1959 the Ontario the College of Physicians and Surgeons published a report on “Osteopathy and Chiropractic” outlining a powerful offensive policy to give chiropractic in Ontario a knock back. This triggered several Royal Commissions throughout the 1960’s looking at the state of health care in Canada and chiropractic care in particular. Chiropractic was determined to be “a valid health service” by the Quebec Commission, which was accepted by the federal government’s Hall Royal Commission on Health Services in 1961. It wasn't until 1970 that chiropractic services were added to OHIP in Ontario with the government picking up 80 percent of the treatment fees. This OHIP legislation stated, “the potential therapeutic benefits of manipulation have been neglected by the medical profession.” This was a long overdue reprimand for the medical associations.

Since 1989 the chiropractic profession has made great strides towards widespread support within society and within the mainstream health science community. Nowadays there are chiropractic research positions at universities all across Canada getting government grants to support their work. It was an uphill battle but great advances have been made in getting mainstream medicine to accept chiropractic care. Interestingly, Worker’s Compensation Boards became incredible supporters of chiropractic care. They conducted their own research into the cost effectiveness of the chiropractic approach to the treatment of back and neck injuries.

The final piece of legislation affecting the chiropractic profession was passed in Ontario in 1991 as the “Regulated Health Professions Act”. This act replaced the Drugless Practitioners Act of 1925 in regulating chiropractors. This new statute authorized the use of the title “doctor” and granted the right to diagnose, which only four other professions had: optometry, dentistry, medicine and psychology (podiatry was later added). The College of Chiropractors of Ontario was established giving the profession the right of self-regulation under the same legal parameters as the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Even though the chiropractic care field has fought and won many battles in order to survive, there was one loss here in Ontario. OHIP revamped the schedule of allowable treatments and chiropractic was removed.  No matter, given the powerful forces at play behind the scenes, we can all be grateful that chiropractic care has survived the many battles it has had to fight.

For a more in depth look at what was truly going on behind the scenes there is the highly-acclaimed documentary “Doctored”. Doctored is thoroughly-researched and we at Chiro Med Rehab recommend that everyone watch this incredible documentary.

Compression Hosiery

Men and women suffer from time-to-time with lower leg pain, varicose veins, spider veings, thrombosis, phlebitis, edema, as well as leg or foot ulcers. Any one of these can cause immense grief to the point that it impedes ability to walk comfortably, stand or to take part in a favourite activity. Depending on an individual’s situation, compression hosiery may be what is required in seeking relief.

What Is Compression Hosiery?

Compression stockings are special hosiery specifically designed to help prevent further advancement of venous disorders. Simply explained, compression stockings are elastic garments worn on the feet or around the leg that compress the limb. The pressure against the feet or legs reduces the diameter of distended veins. Compression hosiery also aids in decreasing venous pressure and prevents venous stasis. What they are most recognized for is that they relieve the pressure of aching legs.

Using stronger elastics, compression stockings create significant pressure on the legs, ankles and feet. Tightest at the ankles, compression hosiery gradually becomes less constrictive towards the knees (and towards the thighs in the longer varieties). By compressing surface veins, muscles and arteries, the circulating blood is forced through narrower circulatory channels resulting in more blood to return to the heart and less blood pooling in the feet.

Anyone who wears compression hosiery can feel better, especially those who spend a lot of time standing or in sitting positions. Compression socks are especially beneficial for most people because they basically help the body circulate blood more efficiently throughout the feet and legs. Also, those who suffer from inflammation as well as problems with their muscle know are told by their health professionals, that compression socks can make a considerable difference in their overall wellness.

Compression Socks Are Not What They Used To Be

Nowadays compression socks and other hosiery are much more stylish than they were years ago. The fear of being told that wearing these was essential to getting better no longer exists. Today’s compression hosiery is designed for men and women who want to look stylish.

In addition to style, those who enjoy athletic endeavors such as running will find that compression socks will highly benefit them as well, for function and for looks.

If you want to be proactive there are things you can do to help avoid ever needing compression hosiery. Things to watch for that may be precursors to venous disorders:

  • Swollen feet or ankles at the end of the day
  • Pain in the legs after sitting or standing for long periods of time
  • Spider veins
  • Restless legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Leg cramps
  • Legs feel tired and heavy
  • Aching in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Burning or numbness experienced in the feet or legs

If any of these symptoms persist you should make an appointment to see a health professional.  Venous disorders may progress into a worse condition if not examined by a professional.  Early detection and treatment which may be compression hosiery is your best defense against developing worse issues with your veins.e.

If you’re not sure if you may benefit from compression hosiery, give Chiro-Med Rehab Centre a call. Chiro-Med Rehab Centre has a walk-in clinic conveniently located at 10144 Yonge Street, just north of Major MacKenzie Drive in the heart of Richmond Hill. Call 905-918-0419 for more information.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment for individuals who are suffering from many joint and tendon disorders.  More commonly known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) to health professionals, this form of treatment sends acoustic shock waves into the bone or soft tissue which basically reinjures the area on a cellular level.  As a result scar tissue that has penetrated tendons and ligaments becomes broken up. This controlled method of re-injury allows the body to regenerate bone cells and blood vessels which in turn leads to faster healing.

Shock waves are high energy sound waves that are audible. They occur when an aircraft breaks the sound barrier or during lightning strikes. For over thirty years now shock waves have been used in the medical field (for example) to disintegrate kidney stones.

Shockwave therapy treats a variety of conditions that can plague an individual. Some of these include:

  • Lumbar and cervical spine regions
  • Chronic muscular pain
  • Shin splints
  • Bursitis
  • Iliotibial band friction syndrome
  • Patellar tendonitis
  • Hamstrings
  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Calcific tendinosis of the rotator cuff muscles
  • Non healing ulcers
  • Mortons neuroma
  • Hallux rigidus

Depending on the condition and how severe it is depends on how many treatments are required. On average, most patients need about 3 to 6 treatment sessions per week. Clinical studies say that for those who were suited for this treatment there is about an 80 to 85 percent chance of the condition being greatly improved yet 95 percent experience some level of improvement. Most people with a soft tissue injury can benefit from this treatment, especially athletes

Proven Success Rates

• 91% improved for calcific tendinitis
• 77% improvement for tennis elbow
• 90% improvement for plantar fasciitis

How Safe is Shockwave Therapy?

The basic technology involved with this shockwave technology has been actively used on millions of people (mostly in Europe) for several decades.  This technology originates in Europe hence the reason for the high number of people who have benefitted from it.

There are virtually no side effects and even the mild side effects such as redness, tingling or redness is rare and short-lived.

There are many benefits from shockwave therapy. Of course it is non-invasive, basically has no side effects, accelerates healing, and coverage is available from most health insurance companies.  This is a treatment that has been fully tested and backed by a lot of scientific evidence.

Are there People Who Cannot Have this Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is not for everyone. It is typically not used on those who may have bone tumours, circulation or nerve disorders, and certain metabolic bone conditions.  Also, it is not used on women who are pregnant either.

There are some other contraindications and/or precautions to be aware of such as:

  • Cortisone injections
  • Blood thinning medications
  • Heart or circulatory problems
  • Cancer or diabetes

The best thing to do is have a consultation with a qualified health professional so you can find out if you are a candidate for shockwave therapy.

Am I too Old for Chiropractic Care?

As the human body ages many change occur and this includes the spine. Spinal discs, facet joints, muscles, ligaments and other related tissues become weaker therefore less able to withstand normal stresses.

There is not a doubt that regular exercise throughout one's life is critical in order to help thwart off potential health issues.  This is something we all need to keep in mind as we age but for those who are reaching or in their mature years it is never too late to implement an exercise program. Seeking professional guidance on this is important.

Chiropractic procedures are always individualized taking in many factors and this includes the patient's age. For those who are in their mature years they too can benefit from regular chiropractic care that will provide them with many health benefits. Through the use of gentle mobilization and adjustive techniques, stretching, exercise, and if need be physical therapies, spinal stress is decreased which in turn minimizes degeneration. The patient also benefits from increased flexibility and mobility and this is really important for individuals in their mature years.

Studies Prove the Benefits of Chiropractic Care for the Mature.

The best study to refer to was actually done many years ago (in 1996) because the average age of over 400 individuals studied was 80. This study included chiropractic patients and those not under chiropractic care. Here are some of the findings:

  • 87 percent of those in chiropractic care rated their health as good or excellent compared with only 68 percent in the non-chiropractic group.
  • 13 percent of those in chiropractic care rated their health as fair or poor compared with 32 percent in the non-chiropractic group.
  • 44 percent of those in chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66 percent in the non-chiropractic group.
  • Those in chiropractic care were more likely to do strenuous levels of exercise.
  • At a 3 year follow-up, less than 5 percent of those who used chiropractic care required a nursing home while a whopping 48 percent of those who did not use chiropractic care needed a nursing home.
  • At the 3 year follow-up, 26 percent of those who were in chiropractic care were hospitalized compared with 48 percent of those in the non-chiropractic group.
Coulter, PhD et al. Chiropractic and Care for the Elderly. Top Clin Chiro 1996;3(2):46-55.

Chiropractor care for even the elderly has a proven track record of benefits for the health and the overall enjoyment of mobility. At a glance, here are some benefits for those who have maintained good health:

  • increased range of motion and mobility
  • increased balance and coordination
  • increased energy
  • minimized risk of fall injuries
  • minimized spinal stress
  • minimized spinal degeneration
  • increased joint health

For those who have had some health issues some benefits include:

  • decreased stiffness and muscular spasms
  • enhanced tissue healing
  • decreased tissue inflammation
  • decreased arthritis and arthritic joint pain

The best benefit that everyone gets from chiropractic care is balance and coordination. As all of us age our balance and coordination can increasingly be altered. Receptors in our upper cervical joints are mostly responsible for sending information to the brain about balance and coordination and it is these receptors that a large cause of balance and coordination issues in people.

Injuries from falling are very common in the elderly and it truly is one of the more detrimental events that can occur. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada:

“Falls account for more than half of all injuries among Canadians 65 years and over. One third of community-dwelling Canadian seniors experience one fall each year and half of those will fall more than once. The likelihood of dying from a fall-related injury increases with age; among seniors, 20% of deaths related to injury can be traced back to a falls.”

The statistics are rather bleak. Falls account for 34 percent of all injury-related hospital admissions and it is the leading cause of injury-related hospital admissions for seniors. There is great personal suffering and for many of these patients there is the loss of independence. The cost to the system is almost $2 billion every year and 40 percent of nursing home admissions are because of falls.

Chiropractic care can help avert these and other health issues. For more information or should you have any questions, please contact Chiro Med Rehab Centre. Chiro-Med Rehab Centre in Richmond Hill has professionals on staff that can help you maintain good health. Seniors and Injury in Canada
Shin Splints: Periostitis

Many of us have heard the term shin splints but are unsure as to what it really means. Often, the term shin splints is used to describe pain that is experienced at the front of the lower leg; yet the pain originates from inside of the shin bone located at the front of the leg. Individuals who enjoy running, whether professionally or for leisure, tend to experience the pain of shin splints sooner or later more so than other people.

Causes Of Shin Splints

Shin splints are an overuse injury that is also known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, or MTSS. Many athletes who experience shins splints tend to describe an exercise history that includes rapid increases in intensity or duration of impact activities. The most common cause of shin splints is actually repeated trauma to the muscles or bones.

Other causes of shin splints include:

  • Overuse of the legs, resulting in irritated, swollen muscles.
  • Muscle imbalance that can result from an injury.
  • Stress fractures of bones in the lower leg.
  • The condition called ''flat feet", where the arches of the feet have collapsed (upon impact with) the ground there is a major stretching of muscles and tendons).
  • Abnormal tightness of the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles.

Symptoms Of Shin Splints

The following are symptoms of shin splints:

  • Pain around the shinbone (tibia), just below the knee.
  • This pain is often 10 to 15 cm in length.
  • Shin splints are often experienced early on during a workout. It commonly decreases well into the session, only to be felt more intensely at the end and after the workout.
  • The discomfort is often characterized as a dull, aching sort of pain.
  • With extreme cases the swollen muscles can result in irritation of the feet, leading to weakness and even numbness.

Treatment Of Shin Splints

One thing to keep in mind with shin splints is that it is very important to be in the care of a qualified health professional to ensure proper healing. There are two main types of treatment: complete rest and relative rest. Complete rest is completely resting the affected leg so that your body can heal itself, without any physical activities. While effective, this option may not be palatable to some people (e.g. athletes in training). As a result some therapies involve both rest and light physical activities.

The following are treatments commonly used to treat shin splints:

  • Rest of the affected leg.
  • Icing of the affected shin to reduce any swelling and pain.
  • Use of custom orthotics to correct for any gait irregularities.
  • Wrapping a tensor bandage around the affected area.
  • Gentle stretching of the calf and front leg (tibialis) muscles.
  • Anti-inflammatory painkillers (e.g. ibuprofen or aspirin) to reduce swelling and pain. Note that these anti-inflammatory medications can have serious side affects, and should only be prescribed by a doctor.
  • Very occasionally surgery may be required to address an issue that constantly results in shin splints.

Shin splints can result in discomfort and in severe cases debilitating pain, disrupting your routine and enjoyment of life.

Chiro-Med Rehab Centre has the necessary knowledge and expertise to help you recover from shin splints. Our professionals can recommend the type of treatment needed and effectively implement that treatment, getting you back on to your normal routines as fast as possible!

Acupuncture for Weight Loss

Studies have shown that acupuncture offers some benefits to those who are trying to lose weight. The body has energy meridians and the ancient practise of acupuncture helps individuals in a myriad of ways including weight loss.

Weight gain isn’t the result of just a bad diet; there are other factors that contribute to gaining weight. Bad diet habits combined with little or no exercise is perhaps the main reason people gain weight but for some, there are other factors. Hormone imbalances and a slow metabolism (usually linked to lack of exercise) are other reasons.

Often people will blame diabetes for their weight, but most individuals with diabetes get this as a result of eating too much food, including sugar. Results of a large epidemiological study conducted at University of California San Francisco, suggest that sugar may have a direct, independent link to diabetes. An article on the university’s website says:

Researchers examined data on global sugar availability and diabetes rates from 175 countries over the past decade. After accounting for obesity and a large array of other factors, the researchers found that increased sugar in a population’s food supply was linked to higher Type 2 diabetes rates, independent of obesity rates. Their study was published Feb. 27 in PLOS ONE.

Losing weight is a major money-making industry with all sorts of gimmicks, products, and pills offering results. Americans spend over $33 billion every year on weight loss programs. Sadly, over 90 percent fail in their attempt to lose the weight they need to maintain good health. The reality is that changing the diet and regular exercise is critical in achieving results. This is much easier said than done and this is why people tend to seek out “quick fixes” when wanting to lose weight. There are additional ways that can help, but again, diet and exercise must be part of the goal to achieve and maintain results.

Acupuncture

Using acupuncture to help with weight loss is a multi-pronged approach. According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, recent studies have shown that when acupuncture is combined with traditional methods of weight loss, patients lose more weight.

A study published at the National Institutes of Health showed that acupuncture in combination with diet restriction was found to be effective for weight loss. Acupuncture can be used as a synergistic treatment option for obesity control (and weight loss in general).

Of particular interest is acupuncture’s ability to influence obesity hormones. Research measuring the effectiveness of acupuncture for weight loss found that acupuncture treatments increased ghrelin, a hormone that regulates fat storage and metabolism. Acupuncture can also strengthen the function of the liver. The liver is the organ that produces chemicals critical for digestion, the processing of nutrients and breaking fat down. It is suspected that acupuncture may increase tone in the smooth muscle of the stomach to help individuals obtain the “full” feeling.

According to Dr. Oz, acupuncturists focus on the four acupuncture points that target hunger points on the ear. Tiny sterilized needles are inserted along these inner channels to decrease the "heat" generated along these meridians and to stimulate centres that trigger the release of neurochemicals and hormones that help in weight loss.

As with any changes to the body, there may be minor side effects to acupuncture treatment that include fatigue, soreness, and possible muscle spasms. In the weight loss process, the body will experience changes including hormone levels (for the better).

It is very important to seek the services of a qualified acupuncturist in order to obtain best results. Be sure to follow through with diet suggestions and exercise regularly.

Massage Therapy And Pregnancy

Prenatal massage can bring much needed relief to a woman carrying a baby. Every woman can expect some stiffness and muscular tension throughout the pregnancy as the uterus grows and sometimes this tension can take its toll on the mom-to-be.

Massage therapy during a pregnancy is gaining popularity as moms-to-be are realizing that the benefits of prenatal massage include relief. Back pain is perhaps the most common side effect of pregnancy. The added weight puts a lot of strain on the spine and often what starts in pregnancy has continued after the birth. If a woman has other small children while pregnant, carrying them around while pregnant can exacerbate symptoms.

What Conditions Can Be Treated With Massage Therapy?

Many women have discovered that massage can help relieve back pain. In addition to soothing that muscle tension, other prenatal massage benefits include:

  • Relief of edema.
  • Reduction of swelling in the ankles, feet and hands.
  • Reduces swelling by stimulating circulation throughout the body.
  • Reduction of leg cramps and swelling in the legs.
  • Lessens sciatic pain.
  • Helps to relax and reduce anxiety throughout pregnancy.
  • Massage helps to prevent insomnia and promotes a better sleep.
  • Prenatal massage can help relax the unborn child when the abdomen is gently stroked.
  • Lessens muscular discomfort in the lower back and neck.
  • Increases blood and lymph flow which aids in the elimination of toxins throughout the lymphatic and circulatory systems.
  • Increased blood flow also means oxygen is increased in the blood stream which in turn delivers more nutrients to the baby.
  • Massage stimulates release of endorphins into the brain and nervous system. (Endorphins are natural pain killers in the body.)
  • Helps to strength the immune system.

Safe Techniques For Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massage experts modify massage techniques to address the changes a woman's body as she goes through pregnancy. A pregnant woman will have her blood volume increase dramatically, almost by 50 percent and yet blood flow to the legs tends to become sluggish. These changes can put a woman at risk of blood clots in her legs.

Massage therapists know that they need to avoid deep massage on the legs as well as any strong pressure. What they do use are light, slow, gentle strokes on the legs and all massage strokes are in the direction of the heart.

Before any therapeutic massage, it is recommended that a woman speak with her obstetrician first to be sure there will be no contraindications.

Many massage therapists won't give a prenatal massage during the first trimester as there is a risk of miscarriage. Some experts argue that prenatal massage does not directly cause a miscarriage, but there is no research out there that shows a link between a massage and a miscarriage. Regardless, if a woman is at risk of miscarriage then she is not advised to have a pregnancy massage.

Tips to Remember:

  • Always be sure to tell the massage therapist you are pregnant and how far along.
  • Avoid aromatherapy oils.
  • Be sure that your massage therapist is specially trained in pregnancy massage and is certified.

Massaging the wrong areas or focusing on certain acupressure points have been known to trigger uterine contractions in some women making it vital that a prenatal massage be given by a qualified health professional. Massage therapists trained in prenatal massage know exactly what areas to focus on and provide the maximum benefits during the massage therapy.

Before You Run: 5 Helpful Hints To Prevent Injury

The human foot is truly remarkable as it contains a combination of 112 ligaments, 33 joints, 26 bones and a vast network of nerves, tendons and blood vessels that work hard when you run. Before considering to go out jogging or to take up running, it is very important to make sure that your feet are in good working order because the balance, support, and propulsion of a running body depends on the foot.

Before starting to run, there are some things you can do before you hit the pavement to ensure your running experience will be an enjoyable one. Before getting into the helpful hints, what needs to be said is to hydrate before you run or jog – this is very important.

First of all, are your running shoes appropriate? Your choice of footwear needs to be determined based on your foot structure, your weight, how your feet function and where you run. If you are flat footed when you run, or if you run on the balls of the feet, then an orthotic device should be considered. The shoes should provide shock absorption.

Next, proper foot hygiene needs to be practiced. Be sure your feet are kept dry with appropriate socks and powdered. This is especially important if you have blisters. Getting into the habit of powdering will help to keep athletes foot at bay.

Thirdly, start off slow. Jog for two minutes, then walk fast for five minutes then jog for two minutes, and repeat. If your muscles are feeling stiff, then walk. As the days go by, increase the jogging time 30 to 60 seconds at a time until you are jogging for five, fast walking for five. Keep increasing this and diminish the walking time until you are comfortable with just jogging or running. Be sure to make adjustments for weather conditions; the hotter and more humid it gets, lessen your running time.

The fourth hint is a big one – stretch! Before starting any exercise program and this includes running or jogging, proper stretching is important. When the muscles are properly warmed up then the strain on tendons, joints and muscles is significantly reduced. Walking for 5-10 minutes before stretching is what many joggers and runners do first, and then they stretch for 5-10 minutes. It’s important to remember that stretching is not pulling or bouncing.

Three recommended stretches are:

  • Wall push-ups. Stretch one leg at a time by standing a metre away from the wall. Rear leg needs to be straight with the front leg bent as the hands touch the wall. Heels on the ground at all times. Hold the stretch for twenty seconds, and then bend the back leg and hold for twenty seconds, switch legs and repeat three times.
  • Stretch the hamstring. Straighten the right leg, place it, with the knee locked, on the curb or other item that is the same height. Squeeze your quadrieps muscle (front thigh) and point your ankle and toes up towards yourself. Hold for twenty seconds. Switch sides and repeat three times.
  • Stretching the lower back. Lie down on a firm surface. Bring both knees to your chest and hold for twenty seconds. Repeat this five times.

Last but not least, there is one more thing to consider before taking up jogging or running. Your feet are very important, so visiting a health professional before starting an exercise program may save you a lot of aggravation down the road. A health professional will examine your feet and identify any potential problems. This preventative measure can save your feet from unwarranted injuries.
