"I got the DonJoy knee brace about a month ago and the difference is night and day. I’m able to walk and bike once again. I saw an immediate change to the stability of my knee, even stairs are not so daunting to face anymore. I’m very happy to be mobile once more. Even dancing all night no longer proves to be a problem. Most difficult part of getting my brace was the colour / pattern choice. I’d highly recommend this type of brace. By the way my knee injury consists of a blown ACL and severely damaged meniscus!"

Myotherapy

Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy generally used to treat soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement caused by muscle or myofascial pain syndrome.

This form of therapy can best be defined as the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions. When you see a myotherapist, they assess your condition to find out the specific cause of the pain, provide treatment in the form of manual therapy, and restore pain-free functioning.

What is Myofascial Pain Syndrome

First, myofascial are the thin, fibrous strands of tissue that surround and separate muscles. Tendons and ligaments are comprised of bundled myofascia.

Myofascial pain syndrome (also known as myofascial dysfunction) refers to pain and possible inflammation in the body's soft tissues or muscles. Myofascial pain is a chronic, painful condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles). Myofascial pain syndrome involves either a single muscle or a muscle group. There are some cases in which the area where a person experiences the pain might not be exactly where the myofascial pain originates. Experts believe that the actual site of the injury or the strain prompts the development of a trigger point that, in turn, causes pain in other areas. In these cases, this situation is known as referred pain.

Can Myofascial Pain Be Muscle Knots?

Most people have experience a muscle knot. Although this term is frequently used, there is no actual knot even though it feels like it. A muscle knot is actually referred to as being is a myofascial trigger point. Every so often we may have a few random trigger points and this is an annoyance; however, a group of these “knots” is known as is myofascial pain syndrome. So yes, these muscle knots are a form of myofascial pain.

Trigger points can be somewhat debilitating. They can cause far more discomfort than most people believe is possible. Trigger points can generate odd sensations, and the source may not be obvious.

Signs and Symptoms

Those with myofascial pain syndrome usually report regionalized aching, and diffuse, persistent pain in certain muscles and joints. The pain intensity can vary from mild to severe and is usually related to muscle activity. Symptoms may begin after trauma or injury to the affected area or can be of gradual onset. The most commonly affected areas are the muscles in the shoulders and neck.

Trigger points, one of the main characteristics of myofascial pain syndrome, are considered to be hyperirritable, circumscribed spots located in a palpable taut band of skeletal muscle. These points are painful on compression and can produce referred pain, referred tenderness, and even autonomic phenomena. Referred pain and tenderness occur when pain is referred to remote sites from compression of a myofascial trigger point. (For example, pain from compression of trigger points in the scalene muscles of the neck may be felt in the hand.)

If you are experiencing soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement caused by muscle or myofascial pain syndrome then myotherapy may be the preferred treatment.

Myotherapy is not a form of massage therapy, though a qualified therapist may use such a technique during a session if it is necessary for the treatment of your presenting condition. Myotherapy is a form of manual therapy which uses evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation techniques to treat neuromusculoskeletal (nerve, muscle and joint) pain and dysfunction. Clinical myotherapists use massage as their main tool however have also got the skills and knowledge to apply wide variety of other techniques when necessary to further assist the patient regain optimal health.

Some of the other techniques used by myotherapists alongside massage may include:

  • Dry needling or trigger point therapy– when pressure or a needle is applied to a ‘knot’ in the muscle. This aids in the release of these trigger points reducing pain. Even though the same needles are used with dry needling their purpose is different to acupuncture.
  • Myofascial release is another very effective technique when applied with massage. Myofascial release aims to release the fascia that surrounds all muscles.
  • Heat therapy may be used to increase blood flow to an area by opening up the blood vessels. Heat offers a similar effect to massage in that it helps to promote blood flow and lymph flow which brings healthy nutrients and oxygen to the injured site and assists in the removal of wastes and toxins in the blood.

Vitamin B-12 Deficiency and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin is one of the eight B vitamins we need. Our body needs B12 as it is necessary in the production of red blood cells as well as the proper functioning of nerve tissues and healthy brain functioning. It also helps in the regulation and synthesizing of DNA.

B12, and all B vitamins are water soluble and they travel through our bloodstream. Vitamin B12 is not stored in the body and any excess amounts are excreted through urine. Structurally this vitamin is the most complicated and the largest.

B12 Sources

Vitamin B12 occurs naturally in animal products such as fish, meat, eggs, and dairy products. Typically this vitamin is not found in fruits and vegetables making B12 intake a challenge for vegans and some vegetarians. It is critical that vegans take supplements as well as women while pregnant and during breastfeeding.

Foods that are good sources of vitamin B12 include:

  • Beef, pork, ham, poultry, and lamb.
  • Fish, especially haddock, sardines and tuna.
  • Milk, cheese, and yogurt.
  • Some nutritional yeast products.
  • Eggs.

Some foods are fortified with B12 such as some types of soya milk and breakfast cereals.

According to Health Canada recommended daily intake of B12 should be 2.4 micrograms per day for men and women ages 19 to 70. Pregnant women should take 2.6 mcg per day and lactating women 2.8 mcg daily. Some health professionals claim that Health Canada provides a low estimate on what daily vitamin intake should be so if you are concerned that these daily values are not enough for you then be sure to visit a qualified health professional.

For those individuals over the age of 50 it is even more important to not only get the minimum daily recommended allowance but to have your B12 levels checked regularly. As we increase in age our bodies become less able to absorb this vitamin not only from the foods we eat but from supplements. It is critical in order to maintain good health to know that your body is actually absorbing B12.

B12 Facts

  • This is the only vitamin that requires a specific substance for absorption.
  • 30 % of vitamin B12 is lost during cooking.
  • Vitamin B12 is destroyed by light.
  • This vitamin was discovered in 1948.

B12 Deficiency & Symptoms

B12 deficiency is more common in those over 50 years of age. Malabsorption of this vitamin is the main cause of deficiency in those who are older. This is caused by atrophy of the gastric mucosa and the gradual loss of gastric acid.

Low levels of this vitamin can cause a reversible blood disorder called pernicious anemia. This causes fatigue, difficulty thinking and concentrating. Other symptoms of B12 deficiency include:

  • Feeling light-headed, weak, and lethargic.
  • Bleeding gums.
  • Experiencing a sore, red tongue.
  • Pale skin.
  • Constipation or diarrhea.
  • Weight loss.
  • Feel sick to the stomach.

If the level of vitamin B12 has been very low for a long period of time it can damage nerve cells. If this has occurred some symptoms may include:

  • Poor sense of balance.
  • Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes.
  • Depression
  • Loss of mental abilities.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is not something to be ignored because there is a serious risk of permanent nerve and brain damage. Those who do not get enough vitamin B12 have a higher risk of developing psychosis, mania, and dementia.

Infants who lack vitamin B12 may have unusual movements which may include:

  • Face tremors.
  • Reflex problems.
  • Feeding difficulties.
  • Eventual growth problems if left untreated.

B12 Deficiency Treatments

Increasing the foods that have vitamin B12 is the first course of action; however, if your deficiency isn't caused by a lack of vitamin B12 in your diet, chances are you’ll need injections. Vitamin B12 is available in an injectable form to be given subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously.

People with Leber's disease or those who are allergic or sensitive to cobalt or cobalamin must consult their health care provider before taking vitamin B12 supplements.

For a person who is suffering with nerve damage there may be help through chiropractic care in conjunction with either diet and/or B12 supplements. Every person is unique and must be seen by a chiropractor to see if there is chiropractic treatment available for them.

Helmets for Children and Adults

Cycling is a popular fun activity not to mention a form of transportation for many individuals. A bicycle is considered a vehicle under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA); this means a cyclist has the same rights and responsibilities to obey all traffic laws. HTA 104 states:

Every cyclist under the age of eighteen must wear an approved bicycle helmet. Parents or guardians shall not knowingly permit cyclists under sixteen to ride without a helmet. Set fine: $60.00

Although there are no helmet laws for adults there is not a doubt that wearing a helmet can ultimately save a person from incredible harm and possibly death.

A report by the Ontario coroner’s office (The Cycling Death Review) found that almost 75 percent of the 129 cyclists killed in Ontario between 2006 and 2012 were not wearing helmets. There is not a doubt that helmets save lives.

Many have argued that helmets are invasive and violate personal rights. Some have even said that when they grew up there were no helmets and “they did just fine”. Bottom line, this is a different world we live in now; more cars, more distracted drivers, and even many cyclists are distracted because they’re wearing ear buds.  The chances of an accident happening now versus many years ago have increased exponentially.  In fact, those who ride a bike without a helmet triple their chances of a fatality due to a head injury than those who wear a helmet. (The Toronto Star: Cyclists without helmets triple their chance of death by head injury. Oct. 15, 2012.)

There is not a doubt that helmets save lives, not just for children but for adults as well. They also help to prevent head injuries.

Choosing the Right Helmet

Cycling helmets come in three basic styles; multi-use, mountain and road.  A multi-use helmet is a great choice for not just cyclists but also inline skaters. (Skateboarders need a special type of helmet.)

Road helmets are preferred by those hard core cyclists because they have generous ventilation, have an aerodynamic design and they do not weigh much.

Mountain bike helmets are well-noted for the visors, ventilate well at low speeds, and there is enhanced rear-head coverage with a firm, secure fit for the rough terrain.

Hockey helmets are much different because they are designed to take several impacts. (They must be replaced if damaged and this includes loose fitting or missing liner pieces. If the helmet has undergone a severe blow then it should be replaced.)

Getting the Right Size

There is no “one size fits all” helmet that can be considered safe. A good fit is crucial. Even if a helmet is a single size it must be adjustable.

The best way to determine what size helmet is best for you is to measure your head. Wrap a flexible tape measure around the largest part of your head (this is about an inch above the eyebrows). Look for a helmet that matches your measurement.

Wear the Helmet Properly

Once you have a helmet that is the right size it will inevitably need some adjustments. When you make the adjustments the helmet should feel snug, not tight. It needs to sit level on your head (not tilted) and the front edge should not be more than one inch (width of two fingers) above your eyebrows.

When to Replace a Helmet

If there has been a crash in which the cyclist has hit their head then the helmet needs to be replaced. It is also recommended that helmets be replaced every five years. This is because the plastics on the helmet dry out and become brittle with age. After a crash in which the head was hit, the foam inside the helmet usually becomes compressed hence the reason for replacing it.

If you or someone you know has suffered a head injury and has not found relief then consider chiropractic care. Chiropractic care has made amazing advances over the years and there are many possible ways to treat symptoms from a head injury through our concussion management program.

Acupuncture In Richmond Hill For Weight Loss

Studies have shown that acupuncture offers some benefits to those who are trying to lose weight. The body has energy meridians and the ancient practise of acupuncture helps individuals in a myriad of ways including weight loss.

Weight gain isn’t the result of just a bad diet; there are other factors that contribute to gaining weight. Bad diet habits combined with little or no exercise is perhaps the main reason people gain weight but for some, there are other factors. Hormone imbalances and a slow metabolism (usually linked to lack of exercise) are other reasons.

Often people will blame diabetes for their weight, but most individuals with diabetes get this as a result of eating too much food, including sugar. Results of a large epidemiological study conducted at University of California San Francisco, suggest that sugar may have a direct, independent link to diabetes. An article on the university’s website says:

Researchers examined data on global sugar availability and diabetes rates from 175 countries over the past decade. After accounting for obesity and a large array of other factors, the researchers found that increased sugar in a population’s food supply was linked to higher Type 2 diabetes rates, independent of obesity rates. Their study was published Feb. 27 in PLOS ONE.

Losing weight is a major money-making industry with all sorts of gimmicks, products, and pills offering results. Americans spend over $33 billion every year on weight loss programs. Sadly, over 90 percent fail in their attempt to lose the weight they need to maintain good health. The reality is that changing the diet and regular exercise is critical in achieving results. This is much easier said than done and this is why people tend to seek out “quick fixes” when wanting to lose weight. There are additional ways that can help, but again, diet and exercise must be part of the goal to achieve and maintain results.

Acupuncture

Using acupuncture to help with weight loss is a multi-pronged approach. According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, recent studies have shown that when acupuncture is combined with traditional methods of weight loss, patients lose more weight.

A study published at the National Institutes of Health showed that acupuncture in combination with diet restriction was found to be effective for weight loss. Acupuncture can be used as a synergistic treatment option for obesity control (and weight loss in general).

Of particular interest is acupuncture’s ability to influence obesity hormones. Research measuring the effectiveness of acupuncture for weight loss found that acupuncture treatments increased ghrelin, a hormone that regulates fat storage and metabolism. Acupuncture can also strengthen the function of the liver. The liver is the organ that produces chemicals critical for digestion, the processing of nutrients and breaking fat down. It is suspected that acupuncture may increase tone in the smooth muscle of the stomach to help individuals obtain the “full” feeling.

According to Dr. Oz, acupuncturists focus on the four acupuncture points that target hunger points on the ear. Tiny sterilized needles are inserted along these inner channels to decrease the "heat" generated along these meridians and to stimulate centres that trigger the release of neurochemicals and hormones that help in weight loss.

As with any changes to the body, there may be minor side effects to acupuncture treatment that include fatigue, soreness, and possible muscle spasms. In the weight loss process, the body will experience changes including hormone levels (for the better).

It is very important to seek the services of a qualified acupuncturist in order to obtain best results. Be sure to follow through with diet suggestions and exercise regularly.

Lumbar Disc Herniation

The spine is truly a marvelous set of bones, or more adequately stated, the vertebrae. The entire length of the spine provides protection, support and flexibility for your body. Interestingly, the average sized adult head weighs about 5 kilos or about 11 lbs., so the spine is supporting the equivalent of a bowling bowl.

The vertebra houses the spinal cord that is the nerve centre carrying millions of messages between the body and the brain. Nerves branch out from each vertebrae communicating with the various organs and parts of the body. A nerve irritation from spinal misalignment means that you are likely to feel the results elsewhere, such as sciatica or radiculopathy. Neck problems that affect a cervical nerve root can create symptoms such as pain in the arms and hands; and the lumbar (or lower back) nerve will send pain through the leg and to the foot.

Lumbar disc herniation or radiculopathy is a common problem that occurs when nerve roots are irritated or compressed; many people refer to this as sciatica. Actually, about 90 percent of all disc herniations occur in the lumbar region of the spine.

Causes

Getting older means that the discs in the spine generally lose their flexibility and this means the risk of injury increases. An accident, lifting an item incorrectly, being overweight and even smoking can attribute to disc herniations.

When injury occurs, the soft gel-like material inside the disc ruptures through the outer lining of the cartilage. Usually there is space between the spinal column and the discs but when a lumbar disc herniation applies pressure on a spinal nerve, and then there is trouble.

Symptoms

IIf there is pressure happening in the lumbar region, some symptoms include muscle weakness, numbness and sometimes pain. There can also be tingling. If a lumbar disc herniation puts a lot of pressure on the spinal nerves, then the symptoms will be felt more intense. Common body functions such as urinating, defecating, coughing, sneezing or laughing can heighten the pain of a lumbar disc herniation.

Diagnosing

Diagnosing lumbar disc herniation involves a variety of methods depending on which health professional you choose to visit. A health professional may test your coordination, reflexes, muscle strength and possibly even test your ability to feel sensations. In more severe cases, a spinal MRI, CAT scan or X-ray may be required in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment And Management

Your health professional will work with you in order to develop a treatment plan that works best for you. Everyone is unique therefore an individual treatment plan must be catered to take into consideration the severity of the symptoms as well as your activity level.

A lumbar disc herniation can be treated with non-surgical options in about 90 percent of all cases. Some treatment options include the use of heat, the use of cold compresses, or physiotherapy.

Preventing lumbar disc herniation recurrence
can involve simple strategies such as:

  • Maintaining and keeping a healthy weight
  • Good posture at all times
  • Bending the knees when picking up items
  • Avoiding high heels
  • Exercises that help to develop strength in the back muscles and in the abdominal area
  • Reducing or eliminating smoking

Some patients suffering with lumbar disc herniations require surgical intervention but this is only when non-surgical treatments have not provided pain relief; but this is always as a last resort because surgery is invasive.

Chiropractic and physiotherapy treatment options are very effective and for most patients are recommended. Treatment may involve several visits but the results are worth it.

Spinal decompression therapy is another effective method to manage and/or eliminate pain. It's crucial that patients follow the treatment plan as explained by their health professional in order to maximize the end result which is elimination of pain and increased quality of life.

Treating and managing lumbar disc herniations can be successful when you follow the advice of a health professional. There is no need to suffer when there are many simple options available to you.

Conquer Stress With Richmond Hill Massage Therapy

In today’s fast paced world, everyone seems to be in a hurry, burning the candle at both ends to meet deadlines and juggle the responsibilities of everyday life.  Eventually stress can wear down even the hardiest of us, resulting in physical illness.  You may wonder how stress, which triggers an emotional response, can manifest as physical illness, but it is really quite simple.  Every emotion that we feel is associated with the release of chemicals inside the body.  Usually the body absorbs or eliminates such chemicals, but high levels of stress can cause excess amounts of these chemicals to accumulate in the tissues of the body, creating imbalances that can eventually result in the development of dangerous illnesses.  Stress can trigger powerful emotions such as frustration, anger and even depression.  The chemical reactions associated with these emotions often lead to headaches and digestive problems, but can manifest as even more tangible complaints such as heart disease, high blood pressure and even stroke.

Massage therapy is one of the leading methods of relieving stress today, although it has been practiced in many cultures for thousands of years.  Its roots can be found in Greek, Roman, Chinese, Indian and Egyptian cultures several thousand years B.C.  Modern massage therapy often combines techniques borrowed from various different cultures to provide the most beneficial treatment possible.  Richmond Hill massage therapy uses all of the best techniques to provide the most effective treatment possible to relieve your stress and leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

Richmond Hill massage therapy benefits the body in a variety of ways.  It improves circulation, reducing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure.  It also stimulates the flow of lymphatic fluid and endorphins to detoxify the body and relieve pain.  So if you are feeling overwhelmed by stress, why not indulge yourself with massage therapy from Richmond Hill?

Chiropractic Care For Ongoing Back Pain

Although most people experience occasional back pain or injury at some point in their lives, there are some who suffer from back pain on a continuous basis.  A Richmond Hill chiropractor can provide professional treatment for all types of back pain, whether it is occasional pain or an ongoing problem.

Ongoing back pain can have a variety of causes, many of them environmental.  A Richmond Hill chiropractor can correct the problem, but part of the treatment is identifying the source of the pain and taking steps to eliminate it.  Poor posture can be caused by excess body weight, uncomfortable shoes, or standing or sitting in the same position for long periods of time.  Many types of mattresses can also cause back pain.  If you wake up every morning with a sore back, it is a good indication that your mattress is not supporting your spine properly, and you may want to try a different type of sleep surface.  Often mattresses that are too soft do not support the body well enough, allowing the heavier parts of the body to sag and putting strain on the spine.  Lower back pain is one of the most common types of back pain, and it is one that often results in a visit to a chiropractor.

When you visit a Richmond Hill chiropractor, your initial visit will involve an assessment of your condition.  This will include an analysis of the type of pain that you are experiencing as well as an overall examination of your spinal alignment.  This will allow the chiropractor to recommend the right type of treatment for your condition.  Together, you and your chiropractor can work together to address some of the issues that are causing your back pain to allow you to get the most out of your treatment.

Water for Joint Health

Water is critical to life and this includes the human body. There is no shortage of websites out there all sharing their opinions as to how much water we need every day to thwart off dehydration and to nourish all cells in our body. The reality is that there is no “one size fits all” answer for this. Drinking to avert thirst is not enough. Every cell in our body needs water and this includes the joints in our body.

How Much Water to Drink Daily?

The amount of fluid we need in order for all our cells to perform their best varies according to factors such as climate, physical activity levels, and physiology. As a rough guideline, the Dieticians of Canada suggest 2.2 litres (nine cups) per day for women and three litres (12 cups) for men. These totals include food moisture, which accounts for about one-fifth of the average person’s liquid intake and more for people who eat a lot of fruit and veggies. Keep in mind that you’ll need extra fluids if you’re exercising, if the weather is hot, if you are not feeling well, or if you’re somewhere with indoor heating (which can rob moisture from your skin).

As we age our bodies change and with that is the ability to detect the onset of dehydration. Adults from about 20 to 60 years of age generally know when they are thirsty, and this means dehydration has already started. Seniors must take extra care to get fluids on a regular basis every day because their bodies do not detect thirst as easy as they once did. Also, many older people tend to have modest appetites, so they receive less fluid from food. Ageing kidneys tend to function a little less in our elderly so they are sometimes not as good at conserving the water they do get.

It is possible to consume too much water. Those who have certain health conditions such as thyroid disease, kidney, liver, or heart problems may trigger other health issues. Also, individuals who take medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opiate pain medications, and (some) antidepressants risk water retention.

As the body loses water without replacing it, the blood becomes more concentrated and, at a point, this triggers the kidneys to retain water. Also, dehydration means that blood becomes thicker and more concentrated. This creates difficulties. For example, the cardiovascular system compensates by increasing the heart rate to maintain blood pressure. In addition, when a dehydrated body is forced to keep going, such as during exercising or heat stress, the risk of exhaustion or collapse greatly increases. For example, this can cause a person to faint when standing up too quickly.

Thicker blood also means that it is not flowing as freely as it needs to in order to bring oxygen, nutrients and water to all parts of the body. Joints, therefore, become dehydrated.

Benefits of Drinking Water

Water keeps every system in the body functioning properly. The Harvard Medical School Special Health Report: “6-Week Plan for Health Eating” notes that water has many important jobs such as:

  • carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells
  • flushes bacteria from the bladder
  • aids digestion
  • prevents constipation
  • normalizes blood pressure
  • stabilizes heartbeat
  • protects organs and tissues
  • regulates body temperature
  • maintains electrolyte (sodium) balance
  • cushions joints

Our Joints and Water

Water is the most abundant component of the articular cartilage, contributing up to 80 percentage of its wet weight. Approximately 30 percent of this water is associated with the intrafibrillar space within the collagen, although a small percentage is contained in the intracellular space.

Generally, tendons and ligaments consist of about 20 percent cellular material and about 80 percent extracellular material. The extracellular material is further subdivided into about 30 percent solids and 70 percent water. These extracellular solids include collagen and a small amount of elastin. Around 65 to 80 percentage of cartilage is water.

What this means is that the lack of hydration is sometimes associated with joint pain. The water content in cartilage is regulated by proteins that become a gel-like consistency when they come into contact with water. This gel-like liquid provides cushioning, lubrication, shock absorption and nutrition to the cartilage in our joints. They are the framework, much like a sponge. For the sponge to be “full” and provide that “cushion” it needs to be filled with water. This is why, even if you take specific supplements for your joints, without enough water, they will not provide the best benefits. Worse, those taking some prescribed or over-the-counter medications such as NSAIDS may be at risk of chronic dehydration. Some medicines have an effect on the distribution of electrolytes and salts in the body therefore reducing swelling and inflammation associated with pain; however, this can further reduce water content in the body.

According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73 percent water, and the lungs are about 83 percent water. The skin contains 64 percent water, muscles and kidneys are 79 percent, and even the bones contain 31 percent water. Not only do these parts of the body require water, so does the articular cartilage, synovial fluid, ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Without water in the joints, people become susceptible to joint damage and degeneration. It is of the utmost importance to make sure you get a sufficient amount of water to help protect your joints.
